Hamilton has a new climate change target: reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the city by 80% by 2050.

The city met its 2012 target, reducing its 2005 emissions by 10%. It’s also already met its 2020 target, which was a 20% reduction. City council will vote on the new target next week.

The city says in 2011, Hamilton’s greenhouse gas emissions came 57% from local industries. The steel industry contributed 31%, 4% came from residences, 4% from transportation, 3% from the commercial sector and 1% from the municipal body.
