Hazel McCallion awarded $170,000

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion has been awarded $170,000, following the dismissal of a conflict of interest case against her.
McCallion was accused of violating the province’s conflict of interest act when she voted on a development proposal brought forward by a company owned by her son.
Back in June, a judge dismissed the case on a technicality. That same judge considered McCallion’s request for almost $400,000 in costs. He decided on the lower amount, so it doesn’t deter citizens from bringing conflict of interest charges against politicians, but not so low that it would deter citizens from seeking public office.
