Remains found on the escarpment

Hamilton police are looking into the possible discovery of human remains found on the escarpment in Stoney Creek Wednesday. They were found not far from an area where a woman’s body is believed to have been buried in 2009. Cindy Csordas has more.
Some people may remember that this particular area is the same area where police had searched for the remains of Shirley Treadwell. She was the woman police believed died in 2009 and was then buried by her neice.
Hamilton homicide detectives have sealed off the area and have sent the bone that was discovered by the hiker to the centre for forensic sciences. The area that’s being guarded by police is located here near McNeily Road between Queenston and Ridge Road in Stoney Creek. While police wait for results, they’re treating this area as a crime scene. But police have not linked the discovery to the disappearance of Shirley Treadwell just yet.
It was Shirley Treadwells neice Melinda Evans who had admitted hiding Treadwells body and she admitted to continue to cashing Treadwells social assistance cheques after the 62-year old woman who was receiving disability cheques died.
Shirley Treadwell was mentally challenged and lived here in this house with her neice, Melinda Evans. Evans collected Treadwells disability cheques for two and a half years after it’s believed Treadwell died. Evans was eventually sent to jail for 2 years for interfering with human remains and fraud.
So right now, homicide Detective Peter Thom says a forensic anthropologist will examine the bone either Wednesday night or Thursday morning. He’s hoping to have results Thursday. If it’s a human bone, this will become a crime scene and a ground search will begin.
