Canada’s most notorious prison will formally shut its doors today.

The last inmate was transferred out of the Kingston Penitentiary earlier this month. The prison opened in 1835. Federal officials say it’s now outdated and too expensive to maintain.

The “Kingston Pen” has housed some of Canada’s worst criminals, including serial child killer Clifford Olson and double-teen
murderer Paul Bernardo.

The United Way is capitalizing on the prison’s notoriety by holding sold out fundraising tours starting this week.
