CRTC rejects Sun News request

Canada’s broadcast regulator has rejected Sun News Network’s request to be carried on basic cable.

The CRTC says the upstart network does not meet their criteria for a mandatory distribution order, adding that the bar is very high for such an order.

Sun News Network went on the air in april 2011. Three months ago, Sun News executives told the commission that it will go out of business if it doesn’t get approval for the move.

Last year, Sun News lost 17 million dollars, prompting it’s parent company, Quebecor, to call it clearly unsustainable.
