Via Rail to cut 56 jobs between Toronto and Montreal

Via Rail Canada is cutting 56 jobs between Montreal and Toronto.
The cuts include two full-time positions in Aldershot, which means that station won’t have any Via Rail staff at all.
A Via spokesperson says some of the layoffs have to do with the new ways people are buying their tickets. In 2012, only 15% of passengers used a ticket agent. Most booked their seats online or over the phone.
The job cuts include 49 full-time and seven part-time positions. Almost half of the layoffs are at Toronto’s Union Station.
