Surplus cats face death unless adopted

(Video updated) The Hamilton-Burlington SPCA is appealing to anyone looking to adopt a cat to do so today at a special reduced rate because of a large surplus of stray cats.
The city’s animal control department is filled to capacity with about 100 cats and kittens. When it reaches capacity, it is forced to euthanize the animals.
Tomorrow is a euthanization day. Any adoptions before tomorrow will rescue the cats and create space for new arrivals.
The last time a special adoption rate was offered, 37 cats were rescued.
Editor’s note: an earlier version of this story stated the SPCA would euthanize the animals. In fact the Hamilton-Burlington SPCA has a ‘no-kill’ policy. Hamilton’s animal control department will euthanize if necessary.
