Laker grounded in Welland Canal

Shipping traffic on the Welland Canal has come to a halt Friday afternoon because of a disabled lake freighter grounded between locks one and two in St. Catharines.

The “Tecumseh” broke down early Friday morning. Strong winds pushed it to the east bank where it got stuck. As of 2:00 in the afternoon, it’s blocking the path of seven other ships in the canal. Tugs are on their way to pull the vessel to a nearby tie up wall.
