Power plant issue heats up
Premier Dalton McGuinty is standing by his decision to wait on releasing documents on the cost of cancelling an Oakville power plant, until a deal is reached with the builder.
McGuinty says if the sensitive details are leaked too soon, it could drive up costs for taxpayers. However, Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath says the public has a right to know what’s going on behind closed doors.
“The premier says we should trust him now. Why doesn’t he actually start earning that trust, by coming clean with the public.”
McGuinty’s response: “I would encourage the house leaders from the three parties to come to this with a sense of perspective, a sense of responsibility in turns of accountability. If we keep those sentiments in mind, I know that we can find a solution together.”
The parties have been given until September 24th to reach a deal on releasing the documents. Otherwise the McGuinty government could be found in contempt of parliament. Opposition leaders say the deadline isn’t flexible enough and want the papers revealed immediately.
