SIU clears Hamilton cop in shooting

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Hamilton Police officer who fatally shot a man during a stolen vehicle investigation.

Phonesay Chanthachack was killed driving his van in the Quigley and Albright area in February. He hadn’t shown up for his court date that morning on robbery charges, and a warrant had been issued. SIU director Ian Scott says Constable Ryan Tocher’s actions were justified because there was reason to believe the suspect was dangerous.
