Cross border wine restrictions

The rallying cry on Parliament Hill Tuesday might very well be “free my grapes”.

A commons committee will hear from supporters of a bill that would end 84 year-old restrictions on cross-provincial wine sales.

Shirley-Ann George of the Alliance of Canadian Wine Consumers says she often gets reactions of shock when she tells people that it’s actually illegal for them to take wine across provincial borders.

The conservative bill would allow people to ship wine across borders for their personal use, meaning someone in Ontario could order directly from a vineyard in B.C. without the help of a liquor control board.
