Surfing Santa rescued
Unexpected winds this morning almost resulted in a close call for a man dubbed the “Surfing Santa”
The day started out fine for John Fulton as he prepared to take on the waves of the Niagara River in his annual bid to bring awareness to homelessness.
But his 27th run took an unexpected turn when his mast broke halfway through his journey.
The U.S. border patrol rescued him and took him safely to American soil before transporting him back to Canada.
This wasn’t the first time Fulton landed on the U.S. side.
In 2002, heavy winds and currents pushed the Canadian across river to Buffalo where he was arrested.
Luckily for Fulton, that wasn’t the case this time.
He says the border guards were very friendly and even excited to take photos with the jolly surfer.
