Poor air quality in Hamilton

Some parts of Hamilton had an air quality index that hovered near 33 Saturday.


Ideally, the air quality index should sit at 16 or lower.

So that made Saturday a “spare the air” day, meaning strenuous exercise might not be the best idea.
High air quality readings can make it hard on those with asthma.

Toronto’s health department Toronto’s health department says exercising on smoggy days can cause the following side effects:

  • – Reduce the immune system’s ability to fight off respiratory bacterial infections
  • – Inflame and damage lung cells

If you do head out, experts suggest that you avoid jogging or cycling during rush hour, especially on busy streets, and you may want to trade in that run for some quieter, indoor, fun.
