The Hamilton man convicted of killing two women by infecting them with HIV believes he may have contracted the virus during surgery for a cat bite.

Johnson Aziga told a Hamilton court Thursday a cat bit him at the Ugandan veterinary clinic he worked at in 1985.

He believes the surgical tools used to treat the wound weren’t properly sterilized.

The 54 year old was convicted in April 2009 of two counts of first-degree murder, 10 counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of attempted aggravated sexual assault.

If Aziga is declared a dangerous offender, he could be sent to prison indefinitely.
