HAPPENING NOW:

Understanding dementia

A new med school program in the U.S. pairing students with Alzheimer’s patients hopes to meet two growing needs; geriatric specialists, and better understanding of dementia.

Warren McGee is a medical student who is gaining valuable knowledge about memory loss and the aging process through his mentor, a Chicago woman diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. The program was developed by the Feinberg School of Medicine. People in the early stages of dementia spend a year with young med students. It’s hoped to increase awareness and reduce stigma associated with memory loss.
