Students at Fitch Street School in Welland welcomed a special guest Wednesday morning.

Fred Fox is Terry Fox’s older brother. And Wednesday he was sharing old family photos and Terry’s “Marathon of Hope” dreams with these young people. Nine-thousand schools across Canada hold Terry Fox runs. Fred says his family has been overwhelmed by how Canadians grabbed hold of Terry’s vision and ran with it after he no longer could.

“When he was forced to stop, our parents were told ‘expect the Terry Fox run to last a year or two, maybe three. But I think it’s those characteristics that we share with students the personality that Terry had, the values that he showed that working hard, never giving up. And Canadians have attached on to that, have become great ‘Terry Foxers’ and make a difference.”

Fitch Street School raised more than eight-thousand dollars for the Terry Fox run this year. In the past 23 years, the school’s raised more than 100-thousand dollars. Eight-year old Kyra Gillis is just one of the students who participated in the Terry Fox run this year: “So we can raise money for people who have cancer. I’ve been running since I was in kindergarten.”

When the assembly wrapped up, all 350 students were given a Jos. Louis treat. Jos. Louis were Terry Fox’s favourite snack.
