For the first time tonight, we’re getting a look at the man who was behind the wheel of a dump truck when it slammed into the Skyway bridge shutting down a section of the QEW. The 34-year old from Brampton was originally charged with impaired driving, and dangerous driving — but is now facing more charges.

Rai is facing four new and more serious charges following an OPP investigation of the accident.

Rai was granted bail, after appearing in court in person, for the first time. He had been represented by his lawyer, at previous hearings.

The crash on July 31st caused extensive damage to the Skyway bridge which was under repair at the time.

Witnesses say the box on the back of the truck was completely raised, when it hit the overhead beams of the bridge, causing extensive damage, and closing the bridge for four days over a holiday weekend.

Three people were injured, as a result of the crash.

Police later charged Rai with driving with a blood alcohol level over 80, impaired driving, and dangerous driving.

Wednesday afternoon, four more charges were laid. Three counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm — and one charge of mischief endangering life.

A wide-ranging publication ban was imposed on Wednesday’s proceedings to guard the integrity of the police investigation prior to a potential trial on the charges.

As Rai left the court this afternoon, his lawyer David Locke stopped to offer a few brief comments on the proceedings: “Well, there were certain terms that were talked about in court that I really don’t want to talk about. But he’s going to be living a pretty straight lifestyle.  He’s not working at the same employer and he’s not driving a motor vehicle obviously.”

Rai is scheduled for another court appearance on November 7th to set a date for a plea on the charges.
