Blaze destroys Niagara-on-the-Lake eatery

An overnight fire has destroyed a restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Heavy smoke was billowing from Yianni’s Bistro at 65 Queen St when firefighters arrived just before midnight. A resident shot video on his cell phone as fire crews broke windows at the front of the building to begin fighting the blaze.

The restaurant was closed at the time and no one was reported hurt.

Firefighters spent several hours trying to extinguish burning materials inside the rear of the restaurant. Heavy smoke and water damage has gutted the inside of the building which is located on the main tourist shopping street in the town.

Investigators are still trying to determine the amount of damage and the cause.
