Labour Day Classic preview

We’ve been trying to talk football this week, trying to tee up the Labour Day Classic between the Ticats and Argos, but the game itself has taken a back seat to the readiness of Tim Hortons Field. Will it or won’t it be ready for Monday or Tuesday?

If you think the sparks are flying now, just wait until the Ticats and Argos hammer away at each other in a game that’s guaranteed to leave you on the edge of your seat.

The magnitude of the Labour Day Classic transcends the new stadium hype. The game itself is the most important so far this season.

LB Simoni Lawrence: “You know, we want to win all of our games, but it’s more important, more swing if we win in the east, especially against a team like Toronto, right down the 403 for bragging rights.”

The Argos may lead the east with two more wins than the Ticats, but their offence has proven to be quite penetrable.

DB Craig Butler: “They’ve been having problems with turnovers, so it’s taking advantage when those opportunities come.”

The Argos have given-away the ball more than any team in the league, having been intercepted nine times, fumbled fourteen times and lost the ball on downs three times.

While he hopes that trend continues, Defensive Coordinator Orlondo Steinauer knows all too well that Ricky Ray cannot be underestimated.

Defensive Coordinator Orlonda Steinauer: “They have the best guy in the league and as long as he’s back there, they’re gonna’ have a chance to win.”

Simoni Lawrence: “The league knows that if you watch the key to Ricky Ray is you blitz Ricky Ray. Everybody swarming Ricky, trying to take him off his game. That’s what you have to do to a great quarterback.”

With only 6 interceptions to their credit this season, Lawrence says he’s confident the Ticats can improve that stat. All they need to do is shake things up.
