Hundreds of police officers, friends and family said a final farewell to Niagara regional police Constable Joe Mellen Junior. A funeral service for the officer was held today in his hometown of Welland. Mellen died in tragic collision on Highway 406 last Friday morning.

They filled the sanctuary at Faith Tabernacle in Welland to celebrate the life of Constable Joe Mellen. There were touching tributes from his close friends and fellow officers.

Constable Graeme Grant: “There was never a dull moment when Joe was around. If you needed someone to talk to or put a smile on your face, you could always count on Joe to do it.”

Mellen was a talented musician. He loved acting and photography, and martial arts. He simply loved life.

Constable Dan Campbell: “He never hid his personality from anyone. One of the biggest lessons he taught me. He also told me not to let policing change me. And with his help and guidance it never did.”

He was a good cop. He received a police commendation for helping to nab a con-artist who was using a bogus sob story to bilk people out of money.

Constable Tim London: “But he was also my neighbour. And most importantly I was blessed to have him as my friend.”

Joe Mellen was a man who will be sorely missed.

Constable Grant: “So my dear friend. Today, we’re not here to say goodbye. We’ll just be seeing you later. We love you buddy.”
