5 popular beauty industry buzzwords to look out for in 2022

First Published:

From “all natural” to “plant-based,” reading the labels on beauty products can feel like you’re trying to understand a language you don’t speak.

To help us navigate these popular buzzwords, beauty expert Jill Dunn joined Annette Hamm on Morning Live to explain five common phrases you’ll see this year.

Buzzword 1: Vegan

Cruelty-free and vegan products are at the forefront of the beauty industry now more than ever.

“We’ve seen vegan options a lot in hair care and skin care, but not so much in nail polish,” Dunn said.

She recommended a vegan nail polish created by Quo Beauty: “I love that you’re getting eco-conscious but you’re not sacrificing colour and style.”

Buzzword 2: Instant Gratification

The next popular beauty buzzword is “instant gratification,” which means you may notice results now and in the future.

When it comes to reducing wrinkles around the eyes, Dunn recommended the Dermalogica Awaken Peptide Eye Gel.

“It’s great for de-puffing around the eye area,” she said. “It also helps with dark circles and fine lines. I put it on this morning and I found you get that instant tightening.”

Buzzword 3: Zero-Waste

The latest zero-waste shampoo bars have come a long way since their predecessors, Dunn said.

She recommended the shampoo bars by Garnier Whole Blends.

“They have 94 per cent plant-based ingredients blended with no preservatives, silicones, soaps and dyes, have zero plastic waste and are 97 per cent biodegradable,” Dunn said.

Buzzword 4: Micro-Dosing

Popular ingredients such as retinol can be problematic for people with sensitive skin.

That’s why beauty brands are creating products with “micro-doses” of these potent ingredients so they are better tolerated.

Dunn recommended the Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Serum Capsules by Neutrogena.

“Each fragrance-free serum capsule has a precise dose of pure retinol, a dermatologist-approved form of vitamin A,” she said. “It leaves skin hydrated, smooth and supple. It’s a lightweight, non-greasy formula.”

Buzzword 5: Refillable

The final beauty buzzword to look out for in 2022 is “refillable.”

Leading brands are formulating everything from refillable moisturizers to refillable lipsticks, reducing packaging and product waste.
