On the eve of International Women’s Day, the accomplishments of women in Hamilton and Halton were recognized at the 48th annual Women of Distinction Awards.

Hosted by YWCA Hamilton, the event serves to draw attention to innovative women and honour the work they have achieved.

Some 50 nominees were acclaimed at the Hamilton Convention Centre Thursday evening.

In attendance was Medora Uppal, CEO of YWCA Hamilton, who said we don’t take enough time to celebrate women in this community.

“As we do this work we want to continue to recognize that we do not live in a society that is equal yet, that there are still many inequalities that face women and gender diverse people, and tonight is an opportunity to change the potential and inspire for a different tomorrow,” Uppal said.

Denise Christopherson was named as the organization’s honourary 2024 Woman of Distinction.

A former CEO of YWCA Hamilton, Christopherson changed many lives during her 12-year tenure.

She led the creation of the Putman Family YWCA on Ottawa Street, a permanent affordable housing build for 50 women and their families.

Christopherson also contributed to the building of a Centre of Innovation for women’s small business development and advancement in technology and trades.
