MPP Jama joins Parliament Hill protest as more hostages are released

First Published:

The second day of the truce between Israel and Hamas has raised doubts about the stability of the ceasefire deal after the scheduled prisoner-hostage exchange was delayed by Hamas and Israel threatened to resume the war.

Thousands of people marched on Parliament Hill calling for a permanent ceasefire and an end to the siege on Gaza Saturday.

Independent MPP for Hamilton Centre Sarah Jama attended the rally in support of Palestinians, calling the federal government’s handling of the war as shameful.

“We will never be bullied or intimidated into silence while Justin Trudeau and his partners in crime support the genocidal Israeli regime in the slaughter of 14,000 people,” said Jama.

At a press conference held on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stopped short of calling for a ceasefire, despite growing demands.

“We’ve been calling for weeks for a significant humanitarian pause, it is progress that we have right now,” said Trudeau.

The scheduled exchange of 13 Israeli hostages and 39 Palestinian prisoners Saturday was derailed before it resumed a few hours off schedule. Seven foreign hostages were additionally released.

Hamas’ armed wing delayed the release of the hostages, alleging violations of the terms of the truce deal with Israel.

The allegations include claims that insufficient aid has entered Gaza and that the order of prisoners freed deviates from what was agreed upon.

Speaking on the delay, senior Hamas spokesperson Osama Hamdan said “according to the release of the prisoners, we believe that the Israelis are manipulating the issue. We will stand against that.”

Thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv demanding the release of the hostages.

In response to the delay from Hamas, Israel has threatened to resume the bombardment of Gaza by midnight.

The threat was followed by reports from the Palestinian Health Ministry in the West Bank that Israeli forces had killed two people and injured two others in the exchange of gunfire.

After Qatari and Egyptian mediators stepped in, the tense dispute was resolved.
On Friday, Hamas released 24 of the nearly 240 hostages taken during the Oct. 7 attack. In exchange, Israel freed 39 Palestinian prisoners, all of them women and children.

More hostages and prisoners are expected to be released on both Sunday and Monday, according to the terms of the deal between Israel and Hamas.
