Two high-ranking police officers from Niagara announced their retirements on Thursday.

Police Chief Bryan MacCulloch and Dept. Chief Brett Flynn formally told the board of their intention to retire from the force. Their retirements are scheduled for Feb. 1, 2024.

MacCulloch’s career with the force spans more than 39 years. He started policing in St. Catharines in 1984 and climbed the ranks to reach his current position.

As for Flynn, he has dedicated over 33 years of service to the NRPS.

Both officers were appointed to their respective roles on Sept. 28, 2017.

MacCulloch expressed his gratitude for being appointed as the ninth chief of police. He felt honoured to lead the officers of the police service and thanked the board for placing their trust and confidence in him.

“I have witnessed firsthand the compassion, empathy, and the selfless dedication of our members, while they served and protected our community through some of the most unprecedented and challenging times in our history,” said MacCulloch.

Chair Jen Lawson issued a statement announcing the retirements after the meeting, thanking them both for their dedication and service.

She said MacCulloch’s “leadership, vision, and passion for policing have been essential for the growth of the Niagara Regional Police Service.”

Lawson described Flynn as “an extraordinarily devoted and skilled leader within our organization, and he is recognized for his tremendous operational expertise and experience.”

The board said that MacCulloch and Flynn will have the opportunity to participate in succession planning.

Additionally, they can provide input on essential skills and competencies needed by the organization to align with its strategic priorities and service requirements.
