Wild Waterworks facing backlash after weighing guests before entering an attraction

A Hamilton family calling out a local water park for its policy on weighing guests in public before entering a ride.

Wild Waterworks at Confederation Park says there are weight restrictions on its attractions. Riders at Wild Waterworks say they are subjected to public weight checks.

15-year-old Joy Miller says yesterday while at the park she refused to hop on the scale after numerous attempts to enter the Blue Demon Water Slide. Miller says she’s battling the eating disorder anorexia. “I just said I don’t want to, they were fine with that, then the next couple times they said I have to and it’s extremely triggering for me.” Joy Miller’s mother Kathryn says not only is she concerned about her daughter’s health but other children too.

Hamilton Conservation Authority, which oversees the water park tells CHCH News that maximum weight limits are needed for safety, and in an effort not to offend specific individuals, all riders are being asked to go on the scales before being permitted on the attraction.

At Wild Waterworks, there are six slides available for guests and each ride has height and weight restrictions. For four of them, you must be less than 400 pounds while for the other two you must weigh less than 300 pounds.

The conservation authority also tells CHCH News that there is signage before you enter the park and inside noting about their policy for weight checks. They add that they are reviewing how to best meet safety requirements and maintain visitor safety.
