Niagara police have revealed the names of the man and woman who were killed inside a St. Catharines home earlier this week.

Police say 62-year-old George Mummery and 59-year-old Jennifer Allen were found dead at a residence near Queenston Street and Lorne Street early Thursday.

At the time of their initial investigation into the matter, they said that one person had been taken into custody, and said that they did not believe this incident “was a random act of violence.”

On Friday, alongside the names of the deceased, police identified the man who was taken into custody.

They say that Andrew Mummery, 33, of St. Catharines, was arrested at 9:30 a.m. at the Village Square on St. Catharines Street in Smithville on Thursday.

He had a bail hearing that afternoon and currently remains in detainment.

CHCH News has learned that Allen was a former teacher for Niagara’s public school board, and she spent much of her time supporting students at St. Catharines Collegiate.

“Jennifer was a beloved teacher. While she retired two years ago, she continued to support students as a supply teacher in many of our schools,” the District School Board of Niagara said in a statement.

“DSBN is deeply saddened by the unexpected loss.”

Now, authorities are working to piece together his actions between April 30 and May 2.

Police describe him as a white man who stands five feet ten inches, weighs 160 lbs, has short dark hair and is unshaven.

At the time of his arrest, Andrew was wearing a black coat, dark green hoodie, blue jeans and a green backpack.

“Area residents between St. Catharines and Smithville are asked to come forward if they observed the suspect, possibly travelling on foot, to assist with this timeline,” police said in an update Friday.

“Residents are also asked to check their CCTV cameras and/or any dash camera footage as well.”

At this time, there are no other suspects. Police have confirmed that Andrew was known to the deceased but have not commented on their connection at this time.

They say that given the nature of the investigation, they expect the scene to be held for a number of days and add that there is no further known risk to public safety.
