Minor Hockey player convicted after 2013 fight

A former minor hockey player was convicted of assault for his role in an on ice incident fight in January of 2013.

The teenaged player is from Brantford and a judge in Woodstock delivered the verdict. It could be the first of its kind in the province.

What we have seen today could be an indicator of the changing face of hockey. Twenty years ago, the thought of an on ice fight resulting in an assault conviction would have been hard to believe, but it has happened.

Today’s conviction came from a game involving a team of 16 and 17 year olds from Woodstock vs. a team from Brantford.

The young man who was convicted cannot be named because he was a youth at the time, but the victim and his family has been very vocal since the incident.

Here is how the incident played out.

We see Nick Major, the player for Woodstock flip the puck on net. He follows up and stops suddenly at the net, spraying snow on the goalie. That is important, because this can be taken as an insult and was likely the beginning of this incident.

Nick is cross-checked to the ice and hit more than 10 times. He suffered a concussion and a broken nose.

Initially both players were suspended for fighting, but only one player did the fighting.

At the time, Nicks parents brought the tape to the league and the police.
