A Brock University professor has found himself at the centre of a sexual harassment claim against a student.
The alleged incident happened in the fall of 2014 but it wasn’t until this past week that University officials distanced their relationship with the professor.
According to a published report, the student says a history professor gave her alcohol and tried to force himself on her in his office after a night of drinking with fellow students.
The Professor at the centre of it all is David Schimmelpenninck Van Der Oye.
A highly decorated teacher is also the acting Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in Brock’s Faculty of Humanities.
No charges have been filed against him.
The incident allegedly happened in the fall semester of 2014 but it wasn’t until 11 months later that University officials were alerted and an investigation was launched.
Brock University declined to talk to CHCH on camera, but in a written statement said it takes sexual harrassment seriously.
The University also says the professor is no longer assigned to a class nor on campus.
In the written statement, Brock University President Jack Lightstone says the University sincerely regrets the emotional trauma this incident has caused to the complainant.
According to the report, Brock University warned the student repeatedly via email that the results of the investigation were confidential.
The Brock Student Sexual Violence Support Centre says it’s disappointed with how this particular case was handled.
While no one from the centre was able to talk on camera, the centre says in an email, “the University repeatedly ignored the students request to have the centre represent her.”
Saying it left the student feeling silenced, misled and frustrated.
MPP Peter Tabuns says the University was trying to protect its reputation.
And while students say the feel safe on campus, the latest news has them feeling upset.
It’s not clear what role the Professor still has with the University.
CHCH asked Schimmelpenninck Van Der Oye for an interview, but he did not want to comment.
